About CharityScored
CharityScored helps donors make informed giving decisions by scoring nonprofits on financial transparency, program spending efficiency, and executive compensation using publicly available IRS 990 data.
How We Score
Our Trust Score (0–100) is calculated from five weighted factors derived from each organization's most recent IRS Form 990 filing:
- Program Spending Ratio (40%) — What percentage of expenses go directly to programs vs overhead
- Executive Compensation (20%) — Whether officer/CEO pay is reasonable relative to total expenses
- Revenue & Stability (15%) — Organization size as a proxy for sustainability
- Filing Recency (15%) — How recent is their latest 990 filing
- Asset Strength (10%) — Financial reserves and stability
Our Data
We use the IRS SOI (Statistics of Income) annual extract of Form 990 filings, combined with the IRS Exempt Organizations Business Master File for organization details. This covers approximately 340,000 nonprofits that file the full Form 990 (organizations with $250K+ in revenue or $500K+ in assets).
What We Are Not
CharityScored is an informational tool, not financial advice. Our scores are based solely on publicly reported financial data and do not account for program quality, impact, or mission alignment. A high score means strong financial transparency — it does not guarantee a well-run organization.
